Since the introduction of the first generation Apple iPad, tablets have been predicted to give the PC industry stiff competition, and have definitely done so.
Information Data Corporation (IDC) reports a 53% increase in tablet shipments (221.3 million units) from 2012, however, also forecasts that growth will decrease to 22.2% in 2014.
In 2017, when shipments are estimated to reach 386.3 million units, the growth rate of tablets will decline to single digits.
IDC’s report also indicates a gap in the market for larger tablet screens, like the 10-inch iPad Air. The report explains that the predicted decline in growth is primarily due to consumers choosing smartphones with bigger screens, rather than smaller tablets.
There are rumours that Apple and Samsung are introducing tablets even larger than 10-inches in 2014.
