Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and the Group’s bottling company, Nigeria Bottling Company, are under sanction investigations due to quality issues of their products.
The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) released a statement saying, “The Council…investigated the complaint and found among other things, that the cans of Sprite were defective and had health and safety implications for consumers”. Furthermore, after five separate quality investigations, the CPC found even more issues.
Coca-Cola Nigeria and Nigeria Bottle Company have been mandated to provide their manufacturing processes over the next 12 months to ensure quality and safety standards are maintained.
Both companies have also been ordered to pay compensation to consumers that filed the complaint. They risk a three year jail sentence (or a substantial fine) for further negligence, and inevitably a huge loss in brand image and consumer trust in Nigeria.
